NCCEFT Daylong Event:
Developing Confidence in Addressing Sexual Issues
Within Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
Adam Eigner, PhD, Certified EFT Therapist and EFT Supervisor Candidate
Shana Ree Gann, LMFT, Certified EFT Therapist and EFT Supervisor Candidate
We are expanding our previous presentation to increase comfort and skill addressing sexual issues within the EFT model. We are incorporating your feedback from our last quarterly meeting on Sex and EFT and are excited to linger longer, use varied examples, and practice a lot more! We’ve also spoken with other experts in the Sex Therapy/EFT arena and this knowledge has enriched and solidified our working model and our confidence that doing Sex Therapy within EFT is a powerful and necessary skill set for EFT Therapists.
We will show many more videos of us working with clients, giving time to practice and ask questions relevant to your clinical practice. We will take time to clarify and deepen your understanding about sex therapy assessment and how this changes over the course of treatment. We’ll expand the sex therapy interventions of Sensate Focus and Sexual Menus (and others if we have time) and understand how to work with the interventions over time to treat specific sexual issues such as low desire, and erectile dysfunction among other diagnoses.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Through a combination of lecture, videotape and exercises, participants will learn to:
1) Develop comfort to address sexual issues with clients.
2) Differentiate EFT and Sex Therapy interventions.
3) Apply different levels of sex therapy assessment techniques.
4) Apply sex therapy interventions for specific sexual issues.
5) Assess your sexual values and how they impact clinical work.
6) Connect to written psycho-educational and research materials to utilize in treatment.

I became interested in psychology through my love of the arts, specifically modern dance. My MA is in Somatic Psychology and Dance/Movement Therapy. Because of my background, I have a particular passion for how the nonverbal influences and deepens the EFT process. Additionally, I trained at the Community Institute for Psychotherapy and love the long term relational psychodynamic approach. I completed the CIIS sex therapy certification program and am working towards national sex therapy certification. My first modality love is EFT and I’ve been on a quest to keep the integrity of the model while also deepening client’s conversations about sex and sexual issues. Personally, I have a 20-year yoga based mindfulness practice, and a recent passion for tango both of which inform my psychotherapy work.

I entered my career three decades ago focused on addressing domestic violence and sexual trauma. Starting from this trauma/dysfunction place led me to get interested in what actually makes for healthy relationships. I began training in John Gottman’s nuts and bolts communication approach and learning about sexual diversity and behavioral sex therapy at the San Francisco Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality. Finding these approaches only partially satisfying, I eventually learned about the attachment approach and settled on EFT as my guiding light in psychotherapy and sex therapy work. EFT as an organizing principle has led to gratifying work with a practice in Emeryville and San Francisco with couples and individuals focusing on relational and sexual issues, as well as enjoying sharing this work through supervising.

The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.
