Healing Shame in Couples: Adding Shame Theory to EFT
  • Facilitated by Sheila Rubin, MA, LMFT, Bret Lyon, PhD and Richard Doleman, MA, LMFT
  • Shame is perhaps the most painful of all emotions. It binds with and hides behind other emotions, such as anger and fear, so that it is often hard to detect. Many couples go to great lengths to avoid acknowledging or even feeling shame and this can get in the way of making progress in couples work. Shame often fuels and promotes the negative cycle between members of a couple. Where there is blame, there is shame.

Using the insights that shame theory brings, we will be presenting EFT steps and stages expanded to include and work with the shame cycle. We will include each person’s own private shame which they bring into the cycle, as well as the dance of shame that occurs between them.

      Training DVD and Discussion
    • We will watch and discuss a live Externship training tape featuring Yolanda von Hockauf, Certified EFT Trainer. This is a great opportunity to see a different style of a master EFT therapist at work. Yolanda helps Adriana and Vincent understand the negative cycle that has left both of them feeling alone and disconnected. She helps them begin to understand the underlying feelings and needs that are driving their negative interaction pattern, and the couple begins to communicate in new and more connected ways. Richard Doleman and Carolyn Swearingen will facilitate our discussion.

EFT and Couples Dealing With Infidelity — Great Challenges, Immense Rewards?
      • Facilitated by Pat Shelton, Ph.D., MFT; Lisa Hauck-Loy, M.F.T.; & Donna Davidovitz, Ph.D
      • We will begin by presenting research about how attachment styles and gender differences can influence infidelity and recovery. We will also consider some of the unique treatment issues that can arise when working with the initial crisis of infidelity, such as PTSD symptoms, emotional volatility, and the handling of the details of the affair. We’ll discuss the course of therapy, and specifically look at the challenges we face as EFT therapists working in Stages I and II.

Experienced EFT therapists will then role-play an actual case with a couple, in two parts. First, we will role play a moment in Stage I when the couple were in the throes of crisis. Then, after discussion, we will role play a moment in Stage II during which the couple are addressing attachment trauma and re-establishing trust. Discussion will be an important part of the program throughout.

        • February 26, 2011

        • Getting Triggered as an EFT Couples Therapist, or Why is this so hard?
        • Facilitated by Susan Glick, Ph.D., Karen Rogers, M.F.T., & Phyllis Vince, M.F.T.
        • In this presentation, we will begin by briefly reviewing clinical theories of counter-transference. We will then highlight specific strengths of the EFT model that make this approach extremely effective, but may also increase the likelihood of a therapist becoming activated while working with couples. In a live demonstration, we will employ an Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach to “sculpting” the internal experience of an EFT therapist working with a difficult couple. Participants will explore common reactions, thoughts and feelings that tend to arise in the therapist as he/she sits in the emotional field of a distressed couple. We will conclude with a brief discussion of strategies to assist therapists in dealing with these challenging moments.

        • Role-Play: Volunteers role-played a pursue-withdraw couple and their therapist based on a case vignette prepared by Jan DiSanto. Role-play segments were punctuated by breaking into small groups where people explored possible interventions and directions to offer to the volunteer therapist. That feedback was then reported and discussed in the larger group.
